let’s quit pretending

let’s quit pretending
that
the broken
dishes
are piecing themselves together
into an
unusual mosaic
platter
the neighbors can
oogle

let’s quit pretending

that the dust
on the sill
has only been accumulating
for a week
and that it will
be cleaned
on Tuesday
just like
it always is

let’s quit pretending

that the dozens of meteors
we saw last night
were
as good
as life gets…
anticipating joy
like we did
when we knew
just one
starkiss
would
throw the whole universe
into
giggles,
pale reflections of
love that they shine

let’s quit pretending

you’ve spent too much time
scrubbing yourself with
rose petals
trying
to feel clean,
justified,
worthy of  love
and of loving

let’s do this
instead…

…stand there
…close your eyes

…let me cradle your beautiful soul
in my arms

listen to the quiet beating

that is yours
to
dread
or
embrace

let me peel off that
scratchy sweater
of regret
and worry
and lay it aside

you will know it is shed
without
seeing it go

rest in it, like a boat at sea

now
let me kiss your cheeks
with the tenderness
only
a loved one can give

-no peeking-

just rest
and let me
share with you
all the warmth
i possess

a gift
I have wanted to
give you
for
centuries

for i am you

and you are whole

and loved

and free
